Manufacturers of railway equipment and signaling systems, as well as owners of wagons, must achieve compliance with European regulations, called TSI Wagon, which became effective on January 28, 2007. They are required to obtain a compliance assessment from a recognized body if they wish to sell or operate their equipment in the European Union.
What are Railway Equipment inspections and audits?
In the main countries where railway equipment manufacturers and/or wagon owners are located, Bureau Veritas provides conformity assessment services of sub-assemblies such as interoperability components between railway networks, as well as entire wagons, to the 2001/16/EC European directive. We also assess the conformity of processes for the development of railway signaling and command control systems - and of their components - to international standards series EN 50 12x.
These inspections cover several stages, from design to manufacturing (shop inspections) and when appropriate to the equipment's on-site implementation and commissioning.
What are the key benefits?
- Access for railway equipment manufacturers and/or wagon owners to the whole European market, and potentially to some international markets.
- Better reliability and efficiency of the manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Optimization of equipment development and manufacturing costs (through a support to specifications’ rationalization and implementation follow-up).
- Effective equipment interoperability between the various European railway networks.

FAQ - Bieži vaicāti jautājumi
Applicable European directives should first be identified, and then a conformity assessment diagnosis needs to be carried out against these directives. After implementation of the resulting action plan, Bureau Veritas will issue a compliance certificate.
These compliance certificates are taken into account in the additional verifications which are imposed in each country. For instance, in France, an independent body called Mission Expert Organisme Qualité performs a safety review of the projects, and asks for the relevant compliance certificate(s).
